About

R.S. Maruti, the third child of R. Shanmugam and Indira Devi, was born on 23rd Dec, 1971 in Chennai. The youngest of three siblings, it was only natural that he was pampered, enjoying the love and attention that came his way from all family members. He spent most of his time with Lakshmi Patti (Indira Devi's step mother), whom he fondly called Sindu.

Lineage

R. Shanmugam and Indira Devi were married in the year 1952. Family anecdotes reveal how the couple are inseparable in both their love and their squabbles that usually accompany marital life. Indira was sure he would marry her Samba Mama even when she was just nine years old. A confident young girl with a beauty to match, it was only natural that they were both attracted to each other and turned out to be the best life partners there could possibly be. Indira was also very bold; an incident that has been faithfully retold by subsequent generations is when her husband asked her to fetch him his cigarettes. Contrary to what was expected, Indira crushed the cigarettes and threw them out of the window. When he looked on in surprise and possibly anger, she simply said, “You smoked before you became mine and I couldn’t lay down conditions. Now, this is it.”

R. Shanmugam and Indira were blessed with three children—Raja Ramasamy, Karpagam, and R.S. Maruti. Their first born was one of the very few people in the world to be born without an oesophagus. He was initially treated in India and basic first aid was done. When he was 2 years old he was taken to the United States of America and treated by the best doctors. He was accompanied by his mother and paternal grandfather to the Boston Hospital, USA. Consequently, all three children went to several schools in different parts of South India. Each of them studied in at least 3-4 different schools.

The family’s favourite time is when they spent it all together in Bangalore. It was where Karpagam studied medicine, Raja took up business administration and R.S. Maruti completed his high school. The story of R.S. Maruti getting into the prestigious Bishop Cotton School deserves mention. Shanmugam was such an effective marketer, that he merely walked in to the institution, had a hearty chat with the headmaster, and came back with an admission guarantee. This, when it was well-known that Cottons had an admission wait time of a minimum of 5 years.

Vocation

Shanmugam and his best friend from college, R. Thirupathiswamy started a children's text book publishing house - Samba Publishing Company. Both of them worked very hard and established it as a noteworthy enterprise in Chennai. Through it all, they received the able guidance of Justice K. Ramasamy Gounder. They eventually decided to explore separate interests but continued to build on their lifelong ties of friendship. This bond eventually forged into a new partnership—the marriage of their wards R.S. Maruti and Devi Karpagam.

R. Shanmugam and Indira live in Nochikatuvalasu, managing the farm and overseeing the activities of the village. They are fondly called Ejamanga and Aatha by the villagers. They have been together for 69 years through it all, bearing witness to events from India’s independence to the recent pandemic. They are loved, cherished and deeply respected by not only their family but the large extended family as well.

The sixty-year old publishing business was started by father and father-in-law, who were the best of friends from their time in college. R.S. Maruti joined the family business right after college. When he joined the business, he began to tirelessly work for it and has multiplied it by more than five times since.

He extensively travelled around the state, and built long-lasting, individual relationships with every single customer. He is known to have great work ethics and has instilled the same values in his children. In all his work life, R.S. Maruti has never taken a single day off. During the times he was very sick and unable to wear formals to work, he still turned up everyday in a veshti, and worked harder than he did on normal days. He lives by an adage he has always believed in: ‘Put in your fullest efforts in the smallest things you do.’
